Quick Security Tips

Posted March 31, 2016

With airports becoming busier every day, the lines seem to be getting longer, the flights are getting fuller and it may seem like the airports are understaffed, which can create longer lines at check-in, and airport security wait times, that can be too unpredictable, even in a smaller airport. Saving a few extra minutes, here and there can go a long way. So, we’re providing our travelers with a few quick tips and tricks to make getting through any airport easier than ever.

TSA PreCheck

Members of the TSA PreCheck program have their backgrounds “pre-screened” and receive expedited screening. In most cases they can more quickly buzz through security without having to take off their shoes, or remove their laptops from cases. The U.S. Customs Department’s Global Entry program is another shortcut for frequent international travelers, especially as though customs and immigration lines get longer.

Check Flight Status

Before you leave the comfort of your home or hotel, check your flight status. Flight status updates can change by the minute, so the last minute check is always a good idea. There’s nothing worse than rushing to leave your home, head through security, only to find out your flight has been delayed. Most airlines will text you flight status updates if you sign up on their websites, and other sites like Flightstats.com or tripit.com will also do the same thing.

If Offered, Take the Upgrade

With an upgrade could be expedited screening, whether you’re a frequent flyer or not. These expedited security lines available at some airports are for elite members and, those who are flying in first or business class.

Check-in Online

Especially if you are not checking bags, checking in online can generally save you a lot of time, this way you won’t have to make a stop at the ticket counter and wait in line for them to print your boarding pass. Not to mention, it’s the best way to secure the seat you want on the plane.

Get the TSA App

The TSA has an app, where you can type in the name of an item in a “Can I bring?” search field for instant answers. It also features security wait times, plus a guide to TSA rules for travelers. The app is free and available to iPhone and Andriod.

Easy Access

Before you leave for the airport, put your I.D., credit card, and boarding pass in an accessible part of your wallet or bag. It helps you make sure that you don’t leave home without these essential items, as well as, it helps you get through security just a little quicker because you’re not searching for them, holding up the rest of the line.

Even when you get to the security line, only having the essentials in your pockets, ensures that you’re not finding other random things in your pockets, like money, cell phones, keys, and change. Metal detectors and AITs are sensitive, so empty pockets will help you avoid secondary screening. By the time you get to the security line you should be as close to ready to go through the security machine as possible.

Past Security

It’s important that you check the flight status board, again on the display just past the checkpoint. Unless you’ve gotten to the airport exceptionally early, checking the status board after security, you’re getting closer to your flight time, so the flight status board will be more accurate in showing any delays, or gate changes.

With that being said, when you get to your gate, that’s where the most up-to-date information will be. There can sometimes be a delay between the gate and flight status boards. Besides getting the most up-to-date information on your flight, once you get to the gate you can also gauge how crowded the flight is, as well as, find any terminal amenities, with extra time to enjoy them.

Cancellation

It’s a good idea to add airline 800 numbers into your phone. If your flight is canceled or delayed for a long time, you are going to want to be proactive by being the first to call in to find out your options to booking another flight.

Be Polite

Being polite will get you much farther, than a person who is impatient and rude. Remember that TSA screens more than two million people every day and it’s not convenient for anyone.  The airline agents also can’t control the weather or fix an airplane, but they can help if your plans are disrupted.

It’s inevitable, when traveling by air you’ll have to pass through security, and for that reason, and you may as well make it as easy as possible. Use these tips to waltz through security quickly.
